Imagine that you are carrying a bucket full of water from a well; you soon notice that there are small holes in it. Slowly, water starts to trickle out of these holes as you walk home. When you get home, you still have water in the bucket, but not as much as you could actually have. The leaky bucket is a metaphor for your conversion funnel, a path that visitors take from arriving at your store to making a purchase.
Google Analytics reports will be referenced throughout this Construction Email List article. Google Analytics is a free and affordable analytics tool. Therefore, we use it for demonstrations and examples. If you have a Shopify store, click here to learn about other reports and analyzes available to you.
There are three related reports in Google Analytics that you can use to find leaks in your conversion funnels:
Funnel Visualization Report (Conversions > Goals > Funnel Visualization). This is the most basic report, which presents a visual overview of your funnel depending on the selected goalGoal Flow Report (Conversions > Goals > Goal Flow). This report shows the most accurate path to conversion. Additionally, it is a little more flexible than the funnel visualization, as it allows the use of advanced segments and date comparison.
Reverse Path Report (Conversions > Goals > Reverse Path). This report shows your actual funnels. Here, you'll find funnels you never knew existed. Basically you'll see the three pages you visited before converting. When analyzing these reports, ask yourself where visitors tend to exit the conversion funnels. These exit points are the "leaks" you need to fix. To improve your conversion rate, you'll need to figure out how to plug these holes and keep more visitors in your funnels.
You'll be able to quickly identify problem areas in your conversion funnels with these three reports. So how do you fill these holes?
“We trust in God. Others, please present your details.”
In the words of W. Edwards Deming, "We trust in God. Others, please present your data." The first step is to carry out quantitative and qualitative research to find out why there are leaks and what is the best way to stop them.
The further down the conversion funnel the leaks are, the more impacts they will generate when they are stopped. For example, a small increase in conversion rate has to do with a plugged hole located closer to the bottom of the funnel. That's why it's always smarter to inspect your sales funnel from the bottom up.
